In these tests, the X-29 achieved a top speed of Mach 1.87 and an altitude of 50,000 feet. Most importantly, the U.S. began testing the aircraft's abilities at high angles of attack. This ability became important after the MIG-29 demonstrated its Cobra maneuver. In the MIG, Russian pilots were able to keep their plane moving forward while the nose of the plane pointed up.
